<image:title>Agrarian Kitchen Eatery - Agrarian Kitchen Eatery + Store</image:title>
<image:caption>Commercial Interior The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery and Store. Willow Court is the oldest, continually run asylum located in Tasmania, Australia and had its heritage start before 1827. Tasmania was the first state in Australia to de-institutionalise all of the people it housed and closed the doors of Willow Court/Royal Derwent Hospital in late 2000. Bronte / Ward B was built in approximately 1925. Resident capacity was 20 (but often accommodated more patients) and 3 staff. Staff at the hospital disliked working at B ward because of its reputation. Patients were from several categories from severe mental retardation to high functioning but had limited social skills. There were autistic children there and patients who had been put there by family because of pregnancy out of wedlock. There were also some older patients who suffered schizophrenic episodes but were burnt out. The patients were all transferred to F ward in the late 70s. Prior to the base building works completed in 2015, the building (as with the rest of the site) was largely derelict, subject to theft, arson and vandalism which added to already growing problems of natural decay. In 2008 Rodney Dunn and Séverine Demanet started The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School & Farm, in Lachlan, New Norfolk, down the road from Willow Court. In 2015 Rodney and Séverine fell in love with the beautiful Bronte building in New Norfolk’s Willow Court. With vast expansive space, large windows and high ceilings lined with the original pressed metal, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store was born in June 2017. Original features were retained, with the new design elements working with the character of the building to facilitate a contemporary, refined response in line with the clients brief and vision. Custom designed and fabricated ceramic light-shades, joinery, Tasmanian Oak and steel shelving, and Tasmanian Oak and steel dining tables fill the space and line the walls, serving as a considered backdrop to the fine food, produce and products. Bespoke, patina'd brass lighting by Christopher Boots creates a sculptural counterpoint to pressed tin ceilings, left in their original condition. As an adaptive re-use project, the Agrarian Kitchen Eatery highlights how a unique client and building program can re-invigorate a challenging and neglected site. <image:title>Domain Community Hub / Legacy Park - Domain Community Hub / Legacy Park</image:title>
<image:caption>Tasmanian Architecture Awards - 2019: Award for Public Architecture The area between the Soldiers Memorial Oval and the Domain Athletic Centre has been developed into a new Community Hub, providing communal facilities including a barbecues, a nature-based Playscape and two Wood Fired Ovens. The park was named Legacy Park in March, 2019. The overall masterplan includes axial references the site in its broader context (kunanyi / Mt. Wellington) and the Derwent River, with conceptual cues taken from the prospect, refuge, and geological structures within the Lost World, and summit of kunanyi / Mt. Wellington. The immediate contextual response was to the established bush landscape of the Domain, and the site as the termination of the Soldiers Memorial Walk, from the Cenotaph. Material cues were taken from the memorial Cyprus trees, and adjacent Eltham pavilion, with the aim of creating a coherent language to the built form in the area. The Playscape was developed as an inclusive play space, for children of different ages and abilities, and invites children to climb, clamber and provides opportunities for imagination when playing. The spaces are intended to be flexible and allow for a variety of scales of interaction, with a primary activity area alongside the main toilet and oven pavilion, with secondary activity areas adjacent to the smaller BBQ pavilions. The project has provided much needed facilities to help service the existing activities around the Soldiers Memorial Ovals, and has reactivated an otherwise vacant carpark site. The Wood Fired Ovens and BBQ facilities fill a void within the Hobart CBD for bookable shelters for the public, and the play area is unique within Hobart. The Wood Fired Ovens are for the use of everyone in Hobart, from community groups and organisations to small gatherings of families or friends. The Wood Fired Ovens are fired up every second Sunday for free community use. The main pavilions forms a central hub to activity within the site, containing toilets, storage, and wood fired ovens. Open space, accessible paths, and play areas link the site and remaining pavilions and activity areas. The project team comprised of Playce Landscape Architects (https://playce.com/) who were the lead consultant, and developed the masterplan for the site, and playspace design and documentation. Field Labs were a part of the Playce team, and worked on the overall conceptual design response, design and documentation for the pavilion structures. Gaetano Palmese of Gaetano Palmese Architects was engaged by Hobart City Council in the role of ‘Superintendent’s Representative’ and as such oversaw the contract administration of the project from post tender, through construction to completion of the project. The project was shortlisted in the 2019 Tasmanian Architecture Awards in the Public category, and given an Award for Public Architecture in July 2019. <image:title>Calyx - Calyx</image:title>
<image:caption>Calyx was completed in January 2018. The clients, with a background in design, came with a concept and preferred building system - Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). The design was refined and developed into its final form, with the construction being a hybrid of timber framing for the floors, and SIPs for the walls and ceilings. The SIPs provide R values between R5.7 for the walls and R.7 for the roof. To add to the thermal performance, triple glazed uPVC windows from Germany were installed. The plan is made up of a series of pavilions, each oriented to take in different views, and to create a courtyard, and each pavilion having its own function - kitchen, dining, master bed, guest wing and a separate garage and studio. <image:title>Taramoona - Taramoona</image:title>
<image:caption>Taramoona is a new family home proposed for an amazing site overlooking Frederick Henry Bay in Sandford. A heavy masonry plinth grounds the house to the site, with the deep deck spaces creating refuge from the wind and sun, intimate outdoor spaces in the otherwise exposed landscape. Cutouts over the decks allow for a sundial beam of light to illuminate the decks. The timber cladding will be left natural to fade as it ages, matching the sun bleached grasses of the site. The living spaces all open out to decks, the pool, and the expansive panoramic views.</image:caption>
